Light Houses

One of Buckminster Fuller’s enduring influences on the build environment is in the realm of lightweight dwellings. This was one of his original concerns back in the 1920s, when he was designing and promoting the first versions of his Dymaxion House.

Phyllis Richardson has recently published Superlight: Rethinking How Our Homes Impact the Earth, examining current examples of light homes and “offer[ing] a global, contemporary perspective, highlighting recent projects from Chile to Vietnam. She also reconsiders what makes a project “light,” expanding the definition from pounds or kilograms to impact on the site, energy consumption (or generation) and the ability to cope with climate change.
