Was there ever an answer to the question about whether or not the fog gun designs have been published or whether or not a commericial product was ever developed?

Submitted by CarolingWholeo on Sun, 2008-07-13 15:48.

I would like to be able to search Help for answers. I incorrectly flagged something because I didn't know what a flag was.
Thanks,

Hi,

I'm working on a book chapter and I need to find the correct attribution (title, publication info, page#, etc.) for this quote:

"You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete."

This was quoted in the Design Science News, Vol. 8, number 3.

I have looked through my books and done a lengthy online search. It is often quoted (and misquoted) but there is never any attribution of when/where it was said/published.

I know this is the technical forum, but the choices for posting are limited and I thought I'd start here. If I need to contact someone else about this, please let me know.

Thanks.
Diana

Hi,

That is just the system thinking that maybe what you posted is spam. I tend to periodically review all the 'spam-like' content and publish anything that is not spam. Unfortunately that is just a step that I had to take to prevent this site from being spammed. Right now the system only checks to see if therea are a huge number of links in the posting and if the posting is repeat content. Perhaps you ended up having a ton of links?
I will look at your comment and publish it!
Sorry about the inconvenience
Best,
- Jochen

Hi Jochen

I received this message after posting to the forum. Is it a new policy? I don't remember running into it before.

In college (60-70s) I ran across a multi-volume work (I believe commissioned by the Government) that Bucky was a member of. It was about futurism and efficiency in general, and a lot of Bucky's concepts were in it. It was my first real introduction to him, although I was in the Montreal Expo dome as a young teenager and thought he was way cool. Does anyone know the title of that work, and is it still available?

hi, that is correct. it is mainly a security risk and therefore HTML features are soemwhat limited. Below the input form where you enter a comment there should be alisting of allowed HTML tags. I believe the link tag <a href="location">link name</a> is allowed. The page-breaks tend to get lumped together, so I think only one <br> tag is allowed.

No, I think the request is that a URL within a post would be automagically converted to a link.

For example. www.bfi.org or http://www.bfi.org would become www.bfi.org

This is a fesature of message-systems such as Vanilla or webmail apps like Gmail. There are security considerations to home-making this sort of replacement, but perhaps Drupal already has the capability.

In writing this (my first post here) I see that the replacement of line-breaks is also a little off. It looks as though two line breaks in a row reduce to a single <br> rather than two, which jams pragraphs together. Perhaps I am wrong; hello all.

Why not make the forum urls clickable. I have to copy the link and paste it in a new window. Do I just have an old computer or is this true for everyone? Thanks.

FAQ SUGGESTION: Links to sources of Fuller artifacts and construction plans. E.g. the fog gun.
I'm amazed that the fog gun is not in production SOMEWHERE! Is 21st century technology not able to produce an ephemeralized version?

Hi Jochen,

Thanks to Jay for responding to my prism question in http://bfi.org/expert. I notice when I click on the name of a person who's posted a question, if I'm not logged in it says "page not found". Seems like it could just invite me to login, or even display some sort of minimal information about the person.

Thanks for putting up the link to my tensegrity book. I like the way the new website encourages contributions.

Andrew,

Sorry to do this but I just switched back the fonts to be fixed. However, this is ONLY temporary, I do want to accomodate your request but it caused a huge issue in my current style sheet and all the fonts were messed up. The problem really is that the *only* browser that does not support dynamic resizing of pixel based fonts happens to be Internet Explorer 6 on PC. I have been working on a new style sheet with all relative font sizes but I need to make sure it looks 100% the same before we can go live with it. In the meantime perhaps you can use this as an opportunity to download and check out firefox - a free and secure open source browser. I should have the fonts all fixed and ready to go by mid-next week.

Again, sorry

- jochen

Hello all Former Design Grads from S.I.U. Carbondale. Has anyone seen or heard if or who is fabricating Flyseye Domes, at all, these days 11/2005. I'm amazed we have heard nothing about it. I wish to pursue this and use current Ballard Elec. Hydrogen Fuel Cells to Heat, Generate Elect. and provide for a independent home. Japan currently is testing Ballard fuel cells 1kw on 10,000 homes. Where is the U.s. on this or do we have our HEADS up Petroleums#$%^well. Hope to hear from you all. Thanks and start demonstrating and initiating. Best, George Thomas

Andrew,

Thanks for the bio, perhaps you should add it to your profile ! I looked into the font-size problem again and it really was in IE6 issue. IE6 on PC can't modify pixel font sizes so I changed the whole site so that now you can adjust fonts on your system.

Jochen and Elizabeth,
.
Yes, I was able to edit my posts. Thanks. But I really can't change the text size. I'm on Windows 2000 Professional with all the latest service packs and IE 6 with the same. There is absolutely no change in text size. Other websites I visit change the text size with no problem. Computer weirdness as usual...
.
As for the blocks on the left side, some of which I had previously called 'advertising', i.e., internal advertising for the BFI store, and various unrelated links, are a waste of valuable space within the context of this particular 'forum' function. May I suggest a thin vertical repeated graphic banner on the left with 'BFI Discussion Forums' printed sideways in the same artistic motif as a more appropriate substitute? This would maximize space, and define the page while keeping the spirit and consistency of the BFI website. Some of the content now on the left side could be moved under the top banner to make room for forum discussion, and others eliminated, as some of it is not necessary within the context of the forum.
.
Since you've tested the forums with all those other web browsers, there is a possibility that my computer configuration has some weird glitch, but it still seems improbable at this point. Were your tests done from inside some integrated development environment, or did you use some other computer systems to test this? Next weekend I'll check it from my wife's computer that's running Windows XP Japanese version. But nevertheless, given my past computer experience, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if my system were the only one that has this problem. I've seen some weird stuff in my days. Could anyone else out there please verify that using Internet Explorer 6 and Win 2000 Professional can or cannot change the text size within these forums?
.
My computer is so fast, it can replicate errors at the rate of 4 billion per second!

Jochen Hartmann,

Please read my post again. I quote: "...doesn't change size with the browser controls...". THE TEXT SIZE DOES NOT CHANGE using Internet Explorer in the BFI forums or website! I don't know how I can make this any clearer. Maybe a little blurb about my computer and technical experience will help put it in perspective:
.
Before I moved to Japan, I was a computer consultant for 20 years, and was a computer expert before I was forced out of high school. The propagandistic term they used to describe me was 'high school drop-out', I disdain! I'm a hacker, inventor, computer programmer, have worked as an electrical engineer, etc., and I'm completely self-taught. Since 1977 I've purchased 26 personal computers, numerous micro-controller development systems, written dozens of custom applications and have installed, supported and serviced more than 2500 computers. My brain eats an interdisciplinary cornucopia of technology for breakfast, lunch, and dinner ... if I let it. Here in Japan I've spent eight years studying all aspects of the brain sciences, i.e., cognitive neuroscience etc, and advanced robotics. I have hobnobbed with some of the worl's best minds in robotics research, have been a lecturer at Nokaidai University, to a group of international university teachers, about a 23-degree-of-freedom tactile humanoid robotic hand I designed, and I teach English for money (sic). An irony to say the least, considering the fact that I literally failed every English course I ever took. I use Bucky's principles of Comprehensive Anticipatory Design Science and Synergetics as the cognitive foundation of my thinking, and of my research goal of designing an artificial brain for humanoid robots, with the final goal of creating human-similar artificial intelligence. Unfortunately for the future of AI and the rest of science these days, I am sorry to inform you that most so-called scientists don't practice science. They aren't allowed to... They are not even allowed to think for themselves. They are forced by their employers, and their Pavlovian university imposed conditioning to practice GRUNCH Capitalism, employing the scientific method to some trivial, and questionable advance, whose final expression is usually some pathetic patent that will never be used, in a vain attempt to justify their own usefulness. Above is an incredibly shallow and over-simplified description of what I know about computers, technology, and other such worldly knowledge.
.
On this trivial matter of text sizing, I doubt I am wrong, and I would be the first person to post an apology and admit it if I am. Believe me when I say I'm no genius, everything I know and have learned, was by slow tedious trial-and-error. I use the text sizing function of the browser dozens of times a day. A sad fact, and an increasing annoying trend in website design Internet-wide is this exact problem. One thing I do know is that you know much more than I do when it comes to designing and maintaining web sites. This is one facet of computer technology that I have not gotten into ... yet. If you can change the text size of the BFI website and forums with Firefox, I believe it would be prudent to look into the behavior of other Internet browsers in comparison. There is no sense in limiting this functionality to the largest sector of web browser users.
.
In twenty years as a computer consultant, if I only had a nickel for every time the client went against my recommendations, I'd have a pocket full of a thousand nickels, and my clients would be rich today, because it routinely cost them thousands of dollars to undo their decision to not accept my original recommendations, which they hired met to tell them in the first place. This was a good portion of my education. Go figure that out! That's why I quit computer consulting (high-tech baby sitting), because most people think that the way to solve a problem is to pay someone else to solve it for them. If those same people I worked for would have just pick-up the books and solved their own problems for themselves, the way they wanted them solved, they would have been the hacker-cum-computer consultant, and I'd be the chump frivolously throwing money at them to solve my problems.
.
Please don't take my style in a negative way. You'll rarely come across such a strong personality as mine. It comes partly from demanding service from computer help desks, i.e., trying to get answers from software and hardware vendors for my clients, and partly from Bucky's influence on my thinking.
.
Sincerely,
Andrew Owens

Hi andrew,
thanks for your comments - very useful!
One point of clarification:
BFI.org does not have *any* advertising on the site. Not sure what you are referring to...
all the content in the left side nav blocks is haas been designed specifically to enable you to easily interact from within the forums to other content areas of the site. If you are referring to the Google, Worldchanging and SlashGISRS blocks - these are syndicated news feeds we carefully selected for their regualrly published content as we feel it will be of interest to our site visitors.

I just realized that you already explained what browser you are using. Just use the View > Text Zoon function in IE to make the fonts bigger.

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for your suggestions. I assume you have been able to edit your post ? Providing more real estate for the forums is a good idea, I could make all the blocks on the side navigation dissappear once you go into the forums, but I am worried that this might create confusion for some users. I will look into the matter to see whether it is a realistic possiblity.
As far as the text size goes, it should be changeable in all browsers, I can change it in firefox on PC, Mac and Linux as well as Safari (mac) and good old Internet Explorer both Mac and PC. What platform, version and browser are you using ?

Best,
- Jochen

Dear Jochen Hartmann,
.
. I have several requests and a question.
.
. First the question: Is it possible to edit a post after its been posted? I suspect this question will be self-answerable after I post this, my first post. I hope it is, for if not, anybody who makes a mistake will look permanently like a fool.
.
. Second: The people who come to the BFI and log on to discuss Bucky's work all know where we are and why we're here. Do we really need the advertising in the discussion forums?... I don't. Unnecessary advertising is against the principles and spirit of Bucky's teachings. I understand its purpose within the context of other parts of the web site, but here in the forums, it's just an invasion of sanctuary, don't you think so? You could move the toolbox and search functions under the top banner and leave the entire window width unadulterated.
.
. Finally: The text size in the forums, and in the BFI web site in general, doesn't change size with the browser controls, and there seems to be no user settings to select text size and column width preferences, so can you provide a solution to this, at least in the forums? I, and most others use MS Internet Explorer 6... not by choice. Nevertheless, this situation leads to eyestrain, and hence, less desire to participate. I assume that this forum will attract subject matter that requires extensive forethought, editing, and reading time. It would be so nice if that time could be spent in comfort.
.
.p.s. After using the preview comment function, I really must complain about the text formatting here. Is it necessary for this forum engine to remove all spaces and blank lines? I think not! Something really must be done to preserve artistic freedom and aesthetics here! Cheese Whiz anyone? Something that HTML has always worked against.
.
Comments anyone?
.
. Sincerely,
. Andrew Owens

AJN,

that sounds very interesting. I assume you mean a 'human based' network of organizations and people that are all involved in planet-healing ? Or is this some kind of web-ring? Either way we would be very interested in participating. You can contact me directly by just clicking on my name at the top of this posting and then clicking on the 'contact' tab in my user profile.

Look forward to hearing from you,

Jochen: I am a brand new visitor to your BFI site, and I am writing to you because I don't know where else my query would be appropriate, so I will appreciate your help. I am currently involved in developing a project which will launch a positive multi-media network in beta early in 2006. The focus will be on person and planet-healing content in all appropriate fields of human endeavor, searching out the best of the best for entertainment, education, and transformation. I believe that there could be a mutually enriching synergy between the BFI and this project, and that we could possible give you significant exposure to a seeking and receptive audience. I would like to speak in person with whoever could give me further insight into your current goals for promoting the BFI, and generating income from sales of educational products. What would be the best person and contact number for me to call? Thanks for any help you can give me. AJN

Hi Jochen,

It seems to me that having the "Calendar" under "what we do" causes time sensitive events to be a bit too buried. I know that on the home page there are a few event related postings but it sure would be nice to have a short cut to Calendar. I would not intuitively look for non-bfi event listings under the "what we do" nav.

best,

joshua
